The sun has not yet crested the Himalayan foothills when the first sound echoes through the courtyard—the resonant, deep strike of the morning gong softly calling the monks to awaken. By 5:00 AM, the monastery is alive with quiet, purposeful movement. The air is crisp, carrying the faint scent of juniper incense from the main shrine.
Our day begins in the Great Hall, enveloped in the rhythmic chanting of morning prayers (Pujas). For hours, voices blend into a singular harmonic vibration. These prayers are not merely requests; they are profound meditations designed to align the mind with wisdom, compassion, and the lineage of past masters.
Following the morning rituals and a simple breakfast of tea and tsampa, the younger monks attend classes. Education here balances traditional Buddhist philosophy, debate, and scriptural study with modern subjects. The courtyard often rings with the energetic clapping and shouts of philosophical debate—an ancient method to rigorously test one's understanding of the teachings.
As evening approaches, the activities settle. The monks gather once more for evening prayers, dedicating the merit of the day's actions to the benefit of all sentient beings. The final hours before sleep are reserved for personal study and quiet contemplation. In this rhythmic simplicity, true freedom is found.
